FAQ

1. How can I check my Financial Aid status? ~ Go to C107 or check on CUNY First; information may appear 2-3 weeks after the beginning of classes.

2. How can I change my birthdate in the system?
~ Go to C107 to show them, they can change it.

3. Where to get info about parking and purchasing a parking spot?
Bursar's window in M building.

4. How do I get my classes and where?
 ~ Online on CUNY First. Get help with username in “B” building.

 5. Where s the gym located?
 ~ At the back of the “E” building, across from the poolside cafe.

6. Where is the bookstore?
 ~ In the “M” building on the basement level, near the bursar's office.

7. How do I know which major I should choose?
 ~ If you don't know what to major in, then you should go to the advisement office to have a consultation with an advisor. She/he will give you a paper that will ask questions about your main interests, so that way you will be able to identify what you should major in.

8. When should I register for classes?
 ~ The best way to register for classes is choose the classes you want before you try to register. Then register as soon as you can. If possible register for the sesion ahead even if you are not sure about whether you will pass your classes or not. Early registration is best since classes close closer to the beginning of the semester.

9. Can I get help with studying?
 ~ There is free tutoring available in the math lab and the writing center.

10. Do I need to purchase a copy of the textbook?
 ~ If you don't need the entire text, you can check out a reserve copy in the library and make copies as needed.

 11. Is it possible to get 2 internships?
 ~ Yes, you need to complete one before you can apply for the second.

12. How do you transfer to John Jay College from LaGCC when you are majoring in Criminal Justice?  ~You need a 2.5 GPA and then you can get an automatic transfer (This needs to be verified)

13. What is the cost of materials for a class? ~ Aside from the cost of books, there may be other fees for field trips, lab fees, or art and lab equipment.

14. What classes will transfer?
 ~ You can talk to the Transfer office about transferring classes to/from LaGCC. There are also other programs (i.e., the Honors Program) that helps with transfer applications.

15. How do you keep up with work from all your classes?
 ~ You need to stay organized and make a schedule to help manage your time.

16. Does financial aid cover classes in session II?
~   If you register for session II classes at the beginning of Fall or Spring, financial aid will cover these classes.

17. What are the requirements for transferring to a senior college?
 ~ 2.5 GPA to apply, 15-24 credits, and complete all remedial/developmental classes.

18. Can I drop a class once the semester has started?
 ~ Yes, you can drop a class. But there a penalty for dropping a class after a certain time. Be sure to check on the dates for adding/dropping classes without a charge and other dates where you will be charged for dropping a class.

19. Does LaGCC provide counseling for students?
 ~ Yes, in B100, there are counselors available for appointments or walk in appointments. They counsel for academics, personal and crises situations.

 20. Does LaGCC offcer jobs for students?
 ~ Yes they do. They offer on-campus and off campus jobs. Go to the Employment department. You can also ask at C107 about whether you qualify for Work Study based on your financial aid.

21. Is there an office for student activities?
 ~ Yes, the Office of Student Life (M115) offers services, clubs, and other educational opportunities for students to participate in outside of classes.

22. Is there a student government?
 ~ Yes, the SGA hosts activities, elections, and helps fund student centered activities.

23. After a student receives financial aid, when does the FAFSA have to be renewed?
 ~ FAFSA is good for a semester, so it should be renewed prior to the next semester. (OR IS THIS YEARLY?)

 ~ Ask security for help

 ~ You have to apply first and then find out if you qualify.

34. Are there computer labs with printers in each building?
~There are definitely labs with printers in the "E" and "B" buildings.

35. Can I request books from other libraries?
 ~ Yes, you can get a book through interlibrary loan if you want to borrow a book from another CUNY college. Talk to a librarian about how to do it.
